Sam Franks (right) receives a Certificate of Excellence from Program Manager, Eugenia Herman
Sam Franks, a 10-year Bridgeway employee, had just finished his afternoon duties at Bridgeway's W. 81st apartments when commotion in the adjoining dining room alerted him to the emergency. One of his residents was standing, pointing at her throat and choking on a piece of food. Without hesitation, Sam calmly got up from his desk, spun her around and began the Heimlich maneuver. In no time, the piece of food was dislodged and the resident was gratefully taking in deep breaths to recover from the incident.
The resident, visibly shaken, expressed her gratitude multiple times as Sam and other staff members and residents helped her calm down. "I'm just glad I was there and could help," Sam said.
Sam attributes his longevity with the agency to working with people one-on-one. "I truly enjoy working with our residents," he says, "and am happy to be part of what Bridgeway provides for them."
"The residents' health and safety have always been Sam's utmost priority," says Eugenia Herman, Residential Program Manager. "Sam sees this as part of his job and is humbled by this recognition. He remains one of our most dedicated employees."
